Aloe Ferox

Categories ,

Aloe Ferox, also known as Bitter Aloe, is a robust, tall succulent known for its medicinal properties and striking appearance. It features thick, fleshy green leaves with reddish-brown spines along the edges, giving it a dramatic, bold look. The plant can grow up to 10 feet tall, making it an impressive focal point in any Arizona landscape. During winter months, Aloe Ferox produces vibrant orange-red flower spikes that rise above the plant, attracting pollinators such as hummingbirds and bees. This aloe is well-suited for xeriscaping due to its drought-tolerant nature and minimal water requirements.

Type of Light: Full Sun to Partial Shade
Aloe Ferox thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade, especially during Arizona’s hottest months. For best results, plant it in an area that receives plenty of sunlight while offering some afternoon shade to protect it from scorching.

Watering: Low Water Requirement
As a drought-tolerant plant, Aloe Ferox requires minimal water. Water every 2-3 weeks during the summer, allowing the soil to dry out completely between watering. In cooler months, reduce watering to once every 4-6 weeks.

Companion Planting:
Pair Aloe Ferox with Agave Americana, Ocotillo, and Red Yucca to create a striking, drought-tolerant desert garden. For added color, plant alongside Salvia or Verbena, which attract pollinators and provide a vibrant contrast. These combinations create a low-maintenance, water-wise landscape that thrives in the Arizona climate.
