Gopher Plant

Categories ,

The Gopher Plant, scientifically known as Euphorbia rigida, is a hardy, drought-tolerant succulent that features striking blue-green leaves and bright yellow-green flowers in the spring. This low-growing perennial is known for its unique texture and ability to thrive in hot, dry environments, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping or low-water gardens. Its sprawling habit and vibrant foliage make it perfect for rock gardens, borders, or ground cover. The Gopher Plant is also deer-resistant, and its milky sap can help deter gophers, making it a practical addition to your garden.

Type of Light: Full Sun to Partial Shade
Gopher Plant thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade, especially in hotter climates. For best results, plant it in a sunny spot where it will receive at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily.

Watering: Low Water Requirement
As a drought-tolerant succulent, Gopher Plant requires very little water. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings—typically every 2-3 weeks. In cooler months, reduce watering as the plant goes dormant. Ensure well-draining soil to prevent root rot.

Companion Planting:
Gopher Plant pairs well with other drought-tolerant plants such as Agave, Sedum, and Desert Marigold. It also complements Russian Sage or Red Yucca, adding texture and color to a xeriscape garden. These companions thrive in similar low-water, full-sun conditions, creating a visually appealing, water-wise landscape.
